Her journey into jewellery design began during her college days and even earlier when visiting the family haveli in Jaipur’s Johri Bazaar, where she observed her grandfathers working with artisans and clients.
Since 1735: How is Perfection Crafted?
Making Jadau, Kundan, and Meenakari jewellery is very hard and takes a lot of time. It can take up to two months to make one piece of jewellery. Kundan means ‘pure gold’. To make a Kundan set, they use polkis – uncut or flat-cut diamonds with Meena work.
First, a designer draws the design on paper. Then, they make a frame and model in gold. Next, they engrave the piece, which can be on the front or back. The engraved part is filled with Meena (a mix of powdered glass and colours). After the back is done, they work on the front Kundan setting, filled with wax.
The gold foil is struck until a wall is formed around the stones. The craftsman then chisels, carves, and cleans the piece until it shines. Finally, the piece is embellished (puai).
